Knowing Your Discs
Choosing the right disc is crucial to improving your disc golf game, and understanding the flight numbers is a great place to start. Each disc is rated with four key numbers that indicate its flight characteristics: Speed, Glide, Turn, and Fade.
Speed
The speed rating ranges from 1 to 14 and refers to how fast the disc must be thrown to achieve its intended flight. Higher speed discs are designed for more advanced players with strong throws, while lower speed discs are easier to control for beginners.
Glide
Glide, rated from 1 to 7, measures the disc’s ability to stay in the air. Discs with higher glide ratings will stay aloft longer, making them ideal for longer shots. Lower glide ratings are suitable for more controlled, accurate throws.
Turn
Turn, ranging from +1 to -5, indicates how much the disc will curve to the right (for right-handed backhand throws) during the initial part of its flight. A disc with a rating closer to -5 will turn more sharply to the right, which can help with navigating around obstacles or counteracting natural fade.
Fade
Fade, rated from 0 to 5, shows how much the disc will hook left at the end of its flight (for right-handed backhand throws). A higher fade rating means the disc will finish with a stronger left turn, which is useful for shaping shots around corners and ensuring a predictable finish.
